Montara Water and Sanitary District will soon begin drilling exploratory well boreholes in the Montara Caltrans right of way after its board of directors authorized the work Thursday.
The district is not looking to install new wells any time soon, said MWSD General Manager Clemens Heldmaier. Rather, the decision to test for water comes from a want to establish water rights on the property and be proactive about looking for new sources of water to meet future demand.
“This is a really good opportunity for the district to secure water rights in the Caltrans area; that’s what we’re trying to achieve,” Heldmaier said. “We’re trying to find water and secure water rights to benefit the region.”
